Feeling overwhelmed with your workload? It may be time to embrace delegation.
Delegation is more than just passing off tasks to others. It’s not a sign of incompetence or being bossy. Rather, it’s an essential skill that we need to master to demonstrate effective leadership and strategic decision-making.
When I first started at BigLaw, asking for assistance didn’t feel right. Eager to prove myself, I believed it was my responsibility to handle all tasks on my own. As a junior associate, utilizing the available support and resources made me uncomfortable; then, my perfectionism and the need for control led me believe that it was more efficient and convenient to “do” the work myself.
Initially, this approach worked well as it allowed me to gain hands-on experience and showcase my abilities, resulting in recognition and greater responsibilities. But as my workload increased, I became more overwhelmed and dissatisfied. I needed help but lacked the necessary support. Those I needed were either already committed to helping others or not accustomed to working with me.
Eventually, I learned to delegate. I realized that delegation isn’t just a skill that can be developed through practice but a bridge that takes you from simply doing the work to managing the project. Moreover, the work became so much more enjoyable as I became part of a team.
Many Asian American women are seen as exceptional “doers” but not natural leaders. Why? Perhaps it’s because that’s what we do best – DO – we get things done. However, in the long run, doing everything (even if done very well) hinders our own growth and that of those around us.
So, how can we embrace delegation? A good place to start is with our intention:
Fulfill my responsibilities: Delegation allows us to focus on our core responsibilities and tasks, aligned with our skills and expertise.
Empower others: Delegation provides an opportunity for others to take ownership and become part of an effective team.
Optimize the work product: Delegation leads to better execution by leveraging the team’s diverse strengths and skills.
Ultimately, delegation means ensuring that we have time for what truly matters – both in our professional and personal lives.
